The patch below 'Symbionts 2.3.2 Patch+' will correct the problem. Symbionts is an extension that monitors the startup process. Symbionts displays the name and number of bytes of memory each system extension allocates from the system heap. The name and number appear beneath the extension's icon, and since the name is usually truncated, Symbionts also displays it in the menu bar. Symbionts even shows the icons for those extensions that don't normally reveal themselves. Symbionts Control is a control panel that sets the preferences for the Symbionts extension. It also allows the review of the information collected by the Symbionts extension. Additionally, the control panel is used to manage the loading of system extensions without having to dig around in the System folder. Extensions can be enabled and disabled simply by double-clicking on the extension icon and name. Version 2.3.2 corrects the following problems. - Fixed incompatibility with Suitcase 2.1.4 (and other extensions which keep their resource forks open). - Better support for At Ease and other Finder substitutes. - Extension not sensing System 7.1 correctly and, therefore, not setting its extension type such that all extensions were begin monitored. - Fixed problems introduced with Symantec C++ 6.0.1. - Better size determination for debuggers. - Fixed visual problems (reduced size of dialog, fixed icon highlighting, and jumping text). --Kevin [Archived as /info-mac/cfg/symbionts-232-updt-plus.hqx; 48K] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 1994 17:46:03 +1100 (EST) From: Ken Simpson Subject: [*] Telefinder/User 3.2.2.cpt This is the latest version of Telefinder User. It does many things well, but it is the only product I have seen which does plans. A plan is a set of flow chart-like responses to any particular occurrence. An example is a plan for cold calling. If the answer is no, you might switch that person to be called again in six months. If the answer is yes, you might transfer to a sales plan. Of course any plan can branch into another plan at any point based on any response to any step within that plan. Its all up to how you design it. The program can also automatically print an envelope with a letter. Graphics are supported. You have an out box for all the letters, calls, and things that are due to be done today (or that were left undone from previous days). It supports multi-user access and tracks and logs changes. It has a sophisticated file synchronizing feature called CyberSwap that lets you update Contact Ease databases with newly added or modified contacts from other Contact Ease data files. (You must link them first by synching them.) This feature also allows you to distribute subsets of the data file to different locations or personnel. For instance, you could make sure that Dave only gets contacts with his personnel code on it. Or you can export last names A-F or whatever you like. Hope this helps. --Rick rickchin@delphi.com P.S. This problem is *real*, as I've verified in several discussions with 800-SOS-APPL and one $30 visit to an "Authorized Repair Shop" with my *brand new* Duo 250. (Couldn't find my proof of purchase when I needed it). The symptom is that Duo's refuse to charge their battery, tho running just fine on external power. The cause is a still mysterious (to Apple; they're still tracking this down) conflict between the recently released Duo Enabler (2.0.1?) and the Express Modem software (both of which came pre-installed from the factory in my case). The result is that sooner or later (trigger still unknown), something low-level that controls charging gets corrupted such that none of the standard "reset the world" tricks can repair it (zapping the prom with cmd opt P R, or holding in the reset button for 20 seconds with the battery out, etc). The only way to fix it is to remove the three screws holding in the keyboard (Torx T8 driver; auto supply stores have it) and to disconnect the internal lithium batter for 15 seconds or so. The connector you're looking for is under the right end of the space bar; the one with 3 wires. The connector is so small I couldn't figure how to disconnect it, which is why I gave up and took it to the shop. Turns out that the connector unhooks by motion parallel to the circuit board, best achieved by using a small screwdriver to lever against the two wings provided for this purpose. All this (except the do it yourself part) has been verified with SOS-APPL. They're working on curing the problem at the root, and will release a new Duo Enabler and/or Express Software kit when they do. Be careful if you try this fix yourself; guaranteed to void your warranty if you blow it. And things are *delicate* in there. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jan 94 9:58:18 PST From: Ted Goranson Subject: Cursor Animations I would like to permanantly change my finder/sys- tem cursors to animated, color icons and need some instructions. I have an original LC at home, with a 12" colour monitor to go with it. Virtually everything about the LC has since been upgraded, but I'm now looking into getting a larger screen for it. I'm also keeping half an eye for the fact I'm likely to get a PC at some point as well. I actually already have an ancient 12mhz 286 (no monitor as yet...), but I'm really thinking about some flavour of 486DX. People are unlikely to bite my hand off if I try to sell the 12" second-hand, so I'd like to keep it for use as a second monitor. Which colour monitors (14" to 16") are available for a reasonable price that can form part of a multiple monitor set-up? And which of these systems will also work with a PC? I can't really give any indication of budget because I don't know what I'm likely to have to pay for a system with those capabilities. Up until now I've been looking at attaching a standard SVGA monitor using an adaptor cable, but this wouldn't allow me to use the 12" as a second screen. Does anyone have any ideas? You might gain a little perspective from reading the very civil comments by Adam Engst in Tidbits #168 from March of last year, from which I have excerpted the following: Edwina Riblet, Nisus Software's Director of Marketing, said, "We don't like it any more than anyone else, but our distributors in those areas won't carry the product without the ADB copy protection because of rampant piracy." Edwina said that the requirement started with the Korean distributor and has been echoed by Israeli and Saudi distributors as well others in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. She also noted that this copy protection is not new - Nisus has always been copy protected in those markets and Nisus Software doesn't know of any conflicts with any ADB devices when you put a PETlock in the middle of an ADB string. I'm not pleased about the ADB-dongle copy protection but I can't really complain to Nisus Software about it if distributors won't sell Nisus without copy protection. The root of the problem lies with users in those areas of the world. Those people must work to reduce piracy and convince the local distributors that copy protection is an unnecessary hassle, and only then will all copy protection disappear. Ned S. Dear Netters, Many posters in the past have asked about inkjet refills. IMHO they are not worth it. The other day I was refilling my Stylewriter cartridge, and it burst. I didn't notice it until after the refill hole had its cover replaced and I put it back on my desk. Naturally, the desk got stained. I touched the cartridge along the side that the ink-cartridge touched the desk, and lo and behold ink was there. BTW there was no sign of ink even after using the cartridge clean head button combination. That was done before the refill. I would get more refills, if only the didn't render cartridges unusuable (like the one described above). I know it costs more, but I highly recommend only getting the cartridges more. Meanwhile I'll wait until a company makes refill that is guaranteed not to burst the package (or they will mail you at no charge a new cartridge). If someone knows of such a refill company (that has an 800 number to complain to if the cartridge does break), then I'll buy from them. EVERY OTHER SINGLE MAC > APPLICATION that I know of with a 'FIND' feature comes up with the > previous search target selected (highlighted) so you can just start > typing the new target in and hit return. I have a clarification and a work around for you... If you dismiss the find (or replace) window by hitting cmd-w (closing the find window) or escape (cancel, which also closes the find window), and then call it back up again, the text *is* selected. If you simply click on your document once your done using the find window, you really just send the find window behind your document -- it is still open. When you call it back up (bringing it back to the foreground), it will be in the same state it was in when you left it -- the string will be highlighted if you left it highlighted, and unhilighted if you left it unhilighted. So, if you want the text in the find window to be highlighted, close the find window, rather than just switching it to the background. If you don't want to do that (I often do not because it takes longer to call the find window back), then hit tab twice to select the entire string, rather than backspacing over the entire string. Oh, and it's not a bug, it's a feature! Good luck, Chris -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Christopher B. The Find dialog only has one text entry box, so one tab >selects the previous find string. > Thanks for the clarification, Steve. I guess my normal work mode is to just leave the Find(actually the Find/Replace) dialog open all the time. Both Nisus and WordPerfect come up with the field fully selected no matter how you call up the box. I consider this more intuitive or at least more consistent. If the box is hidden behind a window or closed, why should it act differently to the user when called up the same way (menu or cmd-F)? Not good interface design here by MicroSoft, I think. Also, I have to admit that I prefer a unified Find/Replace dialog box. Why does word make a separate Find command? It seemingly provides no more function than the Replace dialog. This forces one to remember a separate command key for the Find/Replace dialog (the non-intuitive "cmd-H" is the default.). At least you could always change the key mapping so cmd-F calls up the Replace dialog instead, but this sure is a goofy way (IMHO) to have for the default setup. Note that in the Replace dialog in Word you have to hit the Tab key twice to use Steve's selection method since it has Two TextEdit boxes. At any rate I don't use Word so it's no skin off my finger tips. Yes, Nisus indeed uses that obnoxious device, which makes it absolutely unsuitable for a PowerBook, the justification being that its distributors in the WorldScript intensive areas demand it because piracy there is rampant. I hope the market knows better and somebody will come up with a better mousetrap, but so far nobody has. WordPerfect 3 WorldScript abilities are a fake. I've used a Mac since 1984, > and *every* time something like this has been attempted, the product has > failed in the marketplace, usually being overrun by other products from > competing companies that have more sensible policies. Unlike the majority of US software companies, Nisus depends on a truly international market (even before WorldScript). Being WorldScript Savvy, the Complete Flag Edition of Nisus is understandably very popular in non-English and non-Roman language countries. From what I understand, a significant portion of Nisus' revenues are generated from sales in countries other than the US. Some nations have very lax copyright laws (if any) and piracy is rampant. In these markets the only way a vendor can protect its revenues is through copy protection since the law is no recourse there. In these markets, hence, copy protection is not that uncommon. The problem already existed, but now becomes apparent mostly because Nisus is now trying to market the same product to both the protected (by law) and unprotected parts of their market. Thus the dongle. You can be certain that Nisus is not happy with this solution, but until governments in certain countries take measures to enforce copyright laws, it is impossible for a vendor to do business without taking its own measures to protect its product. Should they provide their own police force? The obvious alternative, to sell an unprotected version in some countries and a dongled version in others is an open invitation to smuggling and again, piracy. In a sense they DO offer this alternative in the form of the un-dongled Limited Flag Edition which offers far more WorldScript power than most users need anyway and all of the wordprocessing power of the complete flag edition. If you can come up with a better solution, I am sure that Nisus and other companies would be more than pleased to hear it. I sure would like to hear it myself. It is easy to criticize the use of a dongle or other forms of copy-protection, but it is far harder to think of reasonable alternative ways to protect a vendors revenues from piracy in these situations. Remember, also, if MicroSoft looses 15% of $10 million in sales to piracy, it hurts, but they still brought in $8.5 million. If a small company looses 15% off of only $100,000, it is a lot more painful because with the smaller number of unit sales the margins are invariably not as good for the smaller company (i.e. more overhead per unit sold). [Please note that the 15% number I just used is totally arbitrary -- I don't have any real idea how much money is truly lost, if any, to piracy. Probably non-zero, though.] Disclaimer: I do not speak for Nisus. I just use the product.
